McDowell's Logan Hammer dropped an 8-0 major decision to Evan Botwin of Philadelphia in the 13-14 77-pound final. Hammer was one of three Area 8 finalists. The only champ was Eisenhower's Jacob Johnson at 11-12 200. Also losing in the final from Area 8 was Cambridge Springs' Dylan Reynolds at 10U 105.

Team Erie's Steven Spearman finished third at 113-14 124 pounds with a win against Fort Cherry's Adam Lucarini. Spearman was fourth last year and won two years ago.

Also, catching up a bit, Fort LeBoeuf's Kody Pace was fourth at 13-14 97 pounds, losing 1-0 to Bethel Park's Dylan Mogan. Pace was second last year at 11-12 90.

Reynolds' Dylan D'Durso won the 13-14 97-pound title over returning state runner-up Mack McGuire of Upper St. Clair. Reynolds' Austin Matthews was third at 13-14 102.

McDowell's Cody Nolan, who wrestled back from a first-round loss to the medal rounds, dropped a 3-2 decision to Hopewell's Damon Drositis in the 11-12 115-pound fifth-place match a few minutes ago. The different in the match was Drositis' takedown off of Nolan's shot at the second-period buzzer.

Fort LeBoeuf's Taylor Fox dropped a 4-0 decision to Northeastern York's Jacob Colello in the third-place match at 11-12 95 pounds a few minutes ago.

Line Mountain's Zane Retherford, seventh last year at 11-12 70 pounds, just knocked off returning 10U 70-pound champ Michael Kemerer of Franklin Regional 2-1 in the 11-12 75-pound final.

McDowell's Coleman Cousins lost 3-1 to Catasaqua's Darian Cruz in the 11-12 75-pound third-place match a few minutes ago on Mat 8. Cruz, a head shorter but very quick, connected on an early shot for a 2-0 lead, cut Cousins, and escaped in the third. Cousins' two losses in the tournament were to returning champs. Cruz won at 11-12 65 last year. Cousins lost in the semifinals to Franklin Regional's Michael Kemerer, who won at 10U 70 last year.

Edinboro's Joe Wheeling was eighth, winning 8-0.

Fort LeBoeuf's Garrett Reinweld just locked up third place at 10-under 150 pounds with a 13-2 major decision over Canton's Brady Bryington. Reinwald took injury time late in the third and finished the match limping on his left knee.

Meadville's Luke Carr lost 4-3 in the final to Canon McMillan's Evan Eckert.

Blairsville's Drew Doak just beat Cambridge Springs' Dylan Reynolds 7-2 in the 10-under 105-pound final, handing Reynolds his first loss in 35 matches this season. Doak scored a pair of takedowns and turned Reynolds for three near-fall points late in the first period. Reynolds trailed 7-0 when he reversed Doak in the closing seconds of the match.

Reynolds was the first of three Area 8 finalists to take the mat. Still to wrestle are McDowell's Logan Hammer (13-14, 77) and Eisenhower's Jacob Johnson (11-12, 200).

Greater Latrobe's Luke Pletcher, seventh last year at 10U 60 pounds, beat Curwensville's Shae Bloom 4-1 to win the title at 10-under 65 pounds.

Team Erie's TaNauz Gregory was fifth, beating North Schuylkill's Todd Lane 3-2 on the strength of a second-period takedown.

Connellsville's Daniel Leonard became the tournament's second repeat champ, blanking Warwick's Devin Schnupp 6-0 in the 10-under 55-pound final.

At 10U 70 pounds, Lewistown's Hayden Hidlay, second last year at 10U 60, edged Central Bucks' Evan Wilson 6-5 in the final.

Saegertown's Spencer Lee lost 4-2 in the 10-under 60-pound final to Harrisburg's Tyshawn White, who was fourth last year at 10U 55 pounds. White scored the first takedown and added a second-period reversal. Lee reversed White at the second-period buzzer but was unable to turn him in the third.

Team Erie's Carmen Ciotti lost 8-6 in overtime to Greater Latrobe's Ricky Cavallo for third.

Southmoreland's Tyler Griffiths repeated as champ, winning the 10-under 50-pound title with a pin in 3:53 against Lewisburg's Jordan Gessner. Griffiths built a 4-0 lead, then the two traded reversals in the third period before Griffiths worked Gessner over for the pin.

McDowell's Tyler McKinney was eighth, losing 7-2 to Parkland's Zach Ortman.

The finals are set to begin in just a few minutes as they wrap up introductions during the parade of champions.

For those statistical buffs, Team Erie has the most place-winners among Area 8 clubs with seven, followed by Fort LeBoeuf with six and McDowell with five.

Among Area 6 clubs, Saegertown and Meadville share the most place-winners with four each.

Cochranton's Matthew Bryer and Meadville's Kevin Thompson comprised the final northwestern Pennsylvania entries for tonight's championship matches of the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling tournament. The age 13-14 entries attained the feat the hard way.

Bryer and Thompson reached their respective finals from the pigtail round.

Bryer, the Area 6 second seed at 102, shut out three opponents by a combined score of 31-0 and edged Bellefonte's Cody Fisher 4-2 in the semis. He'll face Wyomissing's Arthur Walsh, who beat Reynolds' Austin Matthews in the other semi.

Thompson also got hot as an Area 6 second seed. His run to the final included a 5-3 semi decision over Tim Maeshack, the Area 10 champ from Williamsport.

Bryer and Thompson's victories gave Area 8 and Area 6 a combined 11 finalists. The tournament's parade of champions will take place at 5 p.m.

Saegertown's Adam Armstrong and Mercer's J.T. Mannozzi are freshmen at their respective high schools. Both qualified for the District 10 Class AA tournament at 130 pounds.

They looked to be on a collision course for the age 13-14, 132-pound final at the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Tournament. West Allegheny's Aaron McKinney had other ideas.

McKinney, the Area 7 champion, shut out Mannozzi 3-0 in their semifinal. He'll face Armstrong in tonight's final.

Armstrong had better success in his semi. The Area 6 winner topped Kyle Dayhoff of Area 9 Conewago Valley.

Dayhoff made the semis from the pigtail round.

Armstrong became the third Saegertown wrestler to qualify for a final.

McDowell's Logan Hammer became the first area finalist for age 13-14 entries. The 77-pounder decisioned Brady Logsdon of Hyndman in their semifinal.

Hammer, the Area 8 winner, will face Evan Botwin of Philadelphia for the title. Botwin posted a 15-0 technical fall over Area 6 winner Harley Peterson of Laurel in the other semi.

What would a parade of champions be without a Reynolds entry?

Dylan D'Urso, the Area 6 champion, advanced to the age 13-14 final at 97 pounds. D'Urso posted an 8-0 major decision over Milton's Eric Wolfe in the semifinals.

D'Urso's championship foe will be Mack McGuire of Upper St. Clair. The Area 7 champion also blanked his semi opponent with a 3-0 victory over Nick Szala of Penn Cambria.

Northwest Pennsylvania is guaranteed at least one champion for the 46th annual Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Tournament. Jacob Johnson of Eisenhower and Austin Andrews of Meadville will meet for the age 11-12, 200-pound final.

Johnson, the Area 8 champion, decisioned Mansfield's Nathan Kriner 5-0 in his semifinal. Andrews, the second seed from Area 6, upset Area 7 winner Tyler Lever of Fox Chapel 6-5 in their semi.

Andrews qualified for the final from the pigtail round. He pinned three opponents before his decision over Lever.

Zach Armstrong of Saegertown advanced to tonight's age 11-12, 125-pound final. Armstrong, the Area 6 champion, needed 32 seconds to pin Big Spring's Danny Hockensmith in the semifinals.

Armstrong joined Saegertown teammate Spencer Lee (10-under, 60) for a chance at PJW glory. Blairsville's Noah Tarr, who blanked Wissahickon's Patrick Fennell 5-0 in the other semi, will be Armstrong's opponent.

Luke Carr of Meadville only needed 15 seconds to qualify for tonight's 10-under, 150-pound final. Carr, the Area 6 champion, attacked from the opening whistle for his fall over Area 7 champ Joseph Kazalas of Keystone Oaks.

Carr was the third and final 10-under entry from Area 8 or 6 to wrestle for a gold medal tonight. He'll face Canon McMillan's Evan Eckert, a 6-4 semfinal victor over Fort LeBoeuf's Garrett Reinwald, for the title.

Dylan Reynolds of Cambridge Springs won his 10-under, 105-pound semifinal. Reynolds took an early 5-1 lead en route to a 6-3 victory over Liam Frank of Penn Delco.

“I’m so excited right now,” said Shawn Reynolds, Dylan’s father and coach. “Dylan is 34-0 and we really hope he can win the championship and end on that note.”

Dylan Reynolds, the Area 8 champion, will face Drew Doak in tonight’s championship match. Doak, the Area 3 champ from Blairsville, beat Derek Allen of Avella 6-2 in the other semi.

Saegertown's Spencer Lee became the first Area 6 entry to advance to tonight's Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Tournament championships. Lee, the area's age 10-under, 60-pound champion, shut out Erie's Carmen Ciotti 8-0 in Saturday morning's semifinals at Tullio Arena.

Lee will face Tyshawn White of Harrisburg for the division title. White, the Area 9 champion, blanked Methacton's Albert Ciccitto 9-0 in the other semi.

Welcome to the second day of our blog coverage from Tullio Arena, site of the 2008 PJW state wrestling tournament. This morning we'll get you caught up on what's going on in the consolation rounds and then take you through the semifinals.

Here's our first note of the day...

-- We knew the 11-2 65-pound class was tough, but here's how tough: Two third-round consolation matches pair returning place-winners -- high place-winners -- meaning the loser will go home without a medal.

In one of those matches, McDowell's Charles Lenox, third last year at 10U 50 pounds, meets returning 10U 60-pound champ John Demaske of Jefferson-Morgan. In the other, Meadville's Aaron Erghott, second last year at 10U 50 pounds, meets returning 10U 55-pound champ champ Austin Griffiths of Southmoreland.

And, of course, the winners of those two matches face one another in the next consolation round.

Madison Fletcher of Wattsburg, the only girl entered in this weekend’s 46th annual Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Tournament, was eliminated in the age 10-under, 45-pound division.

Fletcher lost by 15-0 technical falls in her two matches. Hunter Martz of Redbank Valley beat her in the pigtail round and Matt Parker of Pennridge in the first round of the consolation bracket.

The tournament resumed Saturday morning at 8 a.m. The championship semifinals, which feature nine Area 8 entries and 13 Area 6 entries, are scheduled to start at 11:40 a.m.

McDowell's Logan Hammer reached the 13-14 77-pound semis with a 2-0 win over Billy Rappo of Council Rock South. Hammer scored the match's only points by picking up a low single in the first period and finishing with a limp arm. Afterward, asked how it felt to reach the semis and secure his second state medal and first top-six finish, Hammer, a man of few words, replied, "Good."

Fort LeBoeuf's Kody Pace, situated in perhaps the tournament's toughest weight class, dropped a 3-2 decision in the semis to returning state runner-up Mack McGuire of Upper St. Clair at 13-14 97 pounds. Pace was second last year at 11-12 90.

-- At 10U 70 pounds returning 60-pound runner-up Hayden Hidlay of Lewistown lost 6-0 to Meadville's Kyle Luben, the Area 6 champ. Luben meets Bentworth's Hunter Neely in Saturday's semis.

-- At 11-12 65 pounds, Burgettstown's Austin McDermitt, fifth place year at 10U 65 pounds, knocked off returning 10U 50-pound runner-up Aaron Erghott of Meadville by technical fall, 15-0 in 3:03.

The two returning champs in the bottom of the same bracket -- Austin Griffiths of Southmoreland and John Demaske of Jefferson-Morgan -- lost in the prelims.

-- McDowell's Coleman Cousins, a quarterfinalist last season, meets returning 10U 70-pound champ Michael Kemerer of Franklin Regional in Saturday's 11-12 75-pound semis.

-- Saturday's 11-12 80-pound top-bracket semifinal matches a pair of returning state finalists. Cumberland Valley's Fredy Stroker was second last year at 10U 75. Penn Trafford's Solomon Chishko won at 11-12 75.

In the bottom semifinal bracket at that weight class, returning runner-up Nicholas Athony of Blue Mountain (2nd. 11-12, 65) was upset 3-2 by Are 5 champ Brook Zacherl of Brookville.

-- At 10U 50 pounds, returning champ Tyler Griffiths of Southmoreland rolled back into the semis with an 11-2 major over Maplewood's Kenyon Andrews. Griffiths now faces Pine Richland's Garrett Burnham, who knocked off returning fifth-place finisher Luke Resnick of Owen J. Roberts in the pigtails.

-- In the quarters at 10U 55, returning fourth-place finisher Dan Morgan (4th, 10U, 50) of Northampton dropped a 7-5 decision to returning eighth-place finisher Devin Schnupp (8th, 10U 55).

In the bottom half of the same bracket, returning champ Daniel Leonard (1st, 10U, 55) rolled into the semis with a 13-0 major over Hempfield's Luke Kemerer.

-- Tournament officials said two wrestlers who were taken from Tullio Arena this afternoon on stretchers with injuries suffered during their matches have been treated and released. The two were taken to Hamot Medical Center by ambulance. Their identities were not available.

McDowell's Coleman Cousins just advanced to the 11-12 75-pound semifinals with a 5-0 win over Shippensburg's Devon Bentley. In his corner were his father, McDowell coach Ed Cousins, and Ed Cousins' brother Paul, the former varsity coach at Fort LeBoeuf.

If you're reading this today and driving in to watch the tournament tomorrow, PJW officials are reminding everyone that all the ramps surrounding Tullio Arena will be open on Saturday. Many of the ramps closest to the arena were unavailable today because of monthly parking leases. Those ramps, along with the surface lots and street parking spaces will be available on Saturday.

We're getting ready to start the quarterfinals. They're calling for the lightweight classes at 10 and under right now. I'll try to provide updates on the upsets and big matchups after each couple of weight classes.

If you're sitting at home keeping track of things on this blog (which, of course, we hope you're doing) and plan to head out to Tullio Arena to catch the quarterfinals, be advised that the tournament is running ahead of schedule. Most bouts are starting about 15 minutes early. The quarters were scheduled to start at 5 p.m. but could start earlier than that.

Now for some trivia for those of you who, like me, have kids involved in youth wrestling -- when was the last time you attended a tournament that was running ahead of schedule?

I can't remember one either.

-- Canon McMillan's Torre Carr, the Area 4 champ, knocked off returning runner-up Jake Bennett of Hyndman 7-1 in the 11-12 160-pound prelims. Bennett was second at 10U 150 last year.

-- Fort LeBoeuf's Kody Pace, second last year at 11-12 90 pounds, won again, beating Greater Latrobe's Tyler Heydorn 5-3 in overtime in the prelims. Pace now gets his second returning runner-up of the day, Upper St. Clair's Mack McGuire (2nd, 82), in the quarters tonight.

-- Returning runner-up Vito Pasone of Meyers (2nd, 11-12, 85) lost 12-6 to Chartiers Houston's Tanner Sutton in the 13-14 112-pounds prelims.

-- The top quarterfinal match at 13-14 117 pounds matches a pair of returning champs -- Wattsburg's Joe Hibbler (1st, 11-12, 105) and Franklin Regional's Ben Johnson (1st, 11-12, 100).

-- At 13-14 132 pounds, West Allegheny's Aaron McKinney, third last year at 13-14 117 pounds, posted a solid 12-0 major decision against United's John Blankenship, who was second last year at 11-12 115.

What a prelim between Mercer's Jonathan Hennegan and Lewistown's Aaron Snook at 11-12 135 pounds. Snook, the returning runner-up at 10U 120, beat Hennegan, the returning champ at 10U 105, 4-2.

-- A nod to former Fort LeBoeuf coach Art Steves for identifying the birds from my previous posts as wrens. I've always said that Art is seldom at a loss for words. But I never realized he was an ornithologist.

Three little birds found their way to the mats from the rafters of Tullio Arena. They flitted around between Mats 9 and 10 for a few minutes before dive bombing a few spectators and returning to the ceiling.

No other wildlife has been spotted so far, not counting, of course, the wild animals clawing their way through the buffet line in the V.I.P. room.

Some more quarters to keep an eye on:

-- At 11-12 70 pounds, Kane's Cody Blankenship, sixth last year at 10U 65, meets Bedford's Ryan Easter, whop was third at 11-12 65.

-- At 11-12 80 pounds, returning 75-pound champ Solomon Chishko of Penn Trafford takes on North Allegheny's Jesse Rodgers, who was fourth last year at 70.

-- At 11-12 85, one of the tournament's hottest wrestlers -- Nick Zanetta of Keystone Oaks -- meets two-time champ Bryan Jastrzebski of Central Bucks. Zanetta opened the tournament by stunning returning champ Ian Brown of Hanover, then edged Area 8 champ Tyler Kuzma of Fort LeBoeuf 3-2 in the prelims.

Part of wrestling is tough calls, and McDowell's Cody Nolan was on the wrong end of one a few minutes ago. Nolan, an 11-12 Area 8 champ at 115 pounds, was tied 1-1 with 32 seconds remaining in his preliminary match against Heath Coles of Norwin when he lifted Coles from a high crotch and returned him to the mat on his hip.

The official stopped the match -- even though the move appeared to be legal and Nolan was in control on the way down -- and awarded Coles a point without giving Nolan the takedown. Coles fought off Nolan's desperation shots in the final seconds to win, 2-1.

-- One other upset of note from the 11-12 prelims: At 75 pounds, Williamson's Logan Everett upended West Branch's Parker Bumburger, who was third last year at 10U 75 pounds.

Mike Copper and I were commenting to each other that this might be the most people either of us has seen at Tullio Arena since the Otters played in the OHL championship series. The place is jammed, and at one point security personnel were concerned they might be reaching capacity, which could result in fans being turned away.

The crowd seems to have settled in as we work our way through the preliminary round. The atmosphere has been great so far, and security staffers have done a good job of keeping the mats clear of extra people who tend to block views of the action.

As always, there were some surprises in the pigtail round. Here is a sampling of returning place-winners who failed to advance against non-placers.

-- At 10-under 75 pounds, Bellefonte's Trevor Corl knocked off returning 10U 70-pound seventh-placer Tommy James of Canon-McMillan, 8-3.

-- At 11-12 65 pounds, Central's Kale Burkett beat Edinboro's Kenneth Stoll, the returning eighth-place finisher at 10U 60 pounds, 2-0.

-- At 11-12 85 pounds, returning state champ Ian Brown (1st, 10U, 85) of Hanover lost 5-2 to Keystone Oaks' Nick Zanetta.

-- At 13-14, 87 pounds, returning PJW third-placer Nick Roberts (3rd, 77) of North Star lost 6-2 to Blue Mountain's Corey Keener. Keener advances to face Area 8 champ Ossie Bowers of Edinboro in the prelims.

-- At 13-14 140 pounds, West Branch's Dylan Corl knocked off returning runner-up Kyle Cline (2nd, 11-12, 125) of Bentworth by fall in 1:16.

Also, in a matchup of returning place-winners at 11-12 75 pounds, Franklin Regional's Josh Shields (5th, 10U, 75) beat Redbank Valley's Willis Gruver (5th, 10U, 70) 6-1.

-- In another bout between returning placers at 11-12 80 pounds, North Allegheny's Jesse Rodgers (4th, 70) edged Haverford's Luke Brooman (5th, 70) 3-2.

-- In another matchup of returning placers meeting in the pigtails, Hempfield's Austin Miller (6th, 77) beat Kiski's Cole Landoski 4-2 at 13-14 92 pounds.

How's this for a rough opening-round draw? Fort LeBoeuf's Kody Pace met Pennsbury's Joshua DiSanto in a 13-14-year-old, 97-pound pigtail bout that matched returning PJW runners-up. Pace, second last year at 11-12, 90 pounds, scored quickly on a blast double, then turned DiSanto, last year's runner-up at 11-12, 75 pounds, in bars, getting the pin in 1:30.

Pace advances to meet Area 3 champ Tyler Heydorn of Greater Latrobe in the prelims at what is arguably the tournament's toughest weight class with 11 returning medalists, including four returning state finalists.

The sight lines for the tournament are a huge improvement over Johnstown, where the plexiglass shields made it difficult to watch matches on the far ends of the arena and created separation.

Here at Tullio Arena, the glass is down and fans are able to watch action anywhere relatively easily. The overall size of the arena has created a much less cramped feel than at Johnstown's aging War Memorial, although the place is creeping closer to full as the pigtail round advances.

Returning PJW champ Tyler Callendar of Council Rock, who won at 10-and-under, 150 pounds, just made quick work in his 11-12, 160-pound pigtail matchup against South Side's Cody Martsolf on Mat 1. Callendar, the Area 11 runner-up, recorded a 25-second pin to advance to the preliminaries, where he will meet Area 10 champ Nick Moore of Lackawanna Trail.

Good morning from Tullio Arena, site of this year's PJW state tournament. Myself and my colleagues Mike Copper and Bob Jarzomski will be reporting updates from the tournament floor on this blog throughout the two days.

We'll be looking for upsets, great matches, interesting tidbits and, of course, tracking the progress of returning champions and place-winners.

If you're tracking us from elsewhere in the state, the weather is snowy and cold -- not all that unusual for Erie in late March.

-- Mayor Joe Sinnott of Erie greeted an arriving crowd 10 minutes before the start of Friday’s 46th annual Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Tournament at Tullio Arena. Sinnott’s words officially marked the tournament return to Erie for the first time since 1992.

-- Hunter Martz of Redbank Valley beat Wattsburg’s Madison Fletcher with a 15-0 technical fall in their 10-under, 45-pound pigtail match. Fletcher was the Area 8 runner-up..
