Guest Post: Sometimes the mind plays tricks

This is a guest post from ERC member and Erie runner, Theressa Miller. (Thank you, Theressa!)

Sometimes what your brain says you need is not what your body needs.

On Sunday my running partner and I did our Cook Forest ½ Marathon simulation run. We did it in about 5 minutes faster than we ran Cooks last year. That was great, but for a training run it was intense. Lots of hills and slanted roads and I threw in a 3.5 mile tempo run on the only flat portion of the run.

On Monday the intensity of the run hit my legs full force. It hurt. Every time I stood up I asked myself what I was thinking. I bailed on my Monday lunch run, pleading fatigue leads to injury. My running partner bought it and let me go.

But then today got here and I am still popping the Aleve. I tried to plead soreness, but she needed to run. Crumb, that means I have to run because I am not about to let her get any faster without dragging me along.

2.1 miles at an easy pace. I figured every step of the run would be painful. It wasn’t. My legs are fine. Better yet, I am refreshed and renewed and ready for the rest of the day.

The brain was wrong and the running partner was right.

P.S. If you ever want to guest post..send them my way. For various reasons, I'm insanely busy at work these days and am having a tough time keeping up with my blogs.
