Saturday Morning Quarterback

-- East did it. The Warriors snapped their 24-game losing streak that had been building since the second game of the 2006 season. Under first-year head coach Leonard Ford, East beat Warren 21-10 Friday at Warren.

Corey Ratliff passed for 243 yards and a touchdown to help the Warriors (1-6) break their streak.

-- East and Warren combined for 512 passing yards -- East had 261 and Warren had 251.

-- McDowell definitely earned some respect Friday in a 30-18 loss to top-ranked Gateway on Friday at Gus Anderson Field. The game was televised statewide on the Pennsylvania Cable Network as the Trojans threw a scare into a Gators team that had not been threatened all season.

-- As usual, quarterback A.J. Fenton was impressive for McDowell. He rushed for 158 yards to go over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He now has 1,034 yards, pushing his career mark to 3,308. Last week he became McDowell's all-time leading rusher.

-- Fenton also passed for 145 yards and two TDs.

-- Strong Vincent continues to rough up any team that stands in its way. The latest victim was Bradford, which had entered play Friday hoping to move a step closer to a Region 6 title. Instead, the Colonels almost instantly took a 14-0 lead and rolled to a 62-0 victory at Veterans Stadium.

Behind 100-yard rushing efforts from Darrell Brooks (115 yards) and Jordan Ferraro (107 yards), Vincent moved to 7-0 overall and clinched at least a share for the Region 6 title with a 3-0 mark. The Colonels could clinch the region title with a victory over East on Friday.

-- A small crowd attended the Vincent game at Veterans Stadium, but the Colonels do have a lot of fans. They just seem to be spread out.

Here's one example: During the live blog -- Friday Night Highlights -- last night one Vincent fan from Atlanta and one who lives in Germany were closely tracking the game online. John Walker, who now lives in Germany, followed the Vincent scoring until the end of the game. He was still online even though it was 4:15 a.m. in Germany.

-- Two teams stayed in contention for the Region 4 title with victories Friday. Fairview (5-1, 4-1) beat Maplewood 42-13, while Girard (6-1, 4-1) defeated Northwestern 28-6. Fairview and Girard are tied with General McLane (5-2, 4-1) for second place in the region. They trail North East (6-1, 6-0) by one game in the loss column.

North East, which defeated Fort LeBoeuf 35-7 Thursday, already has wins over Fairview and McLane. The Grapepickers will conclude the regular season Oct. 31 at Girard.

-- History seems to be repeating for Corry, which puts up big numbers in Region 5 but can't seem to get a big win. The Beavers lost to Grove City 29-20 Friday despite a big night statistically. Scottie Frisina passed for 327 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Beavers. Craig Marti caught seven passes for 195 yards, including a touchdown.

The game was reminiscent of Corry's 49-42 loss to Meadville on Sept. 19. In that game, the Beavers lost despite a 384-yard passing game from Frisina.

-- After missing one and a half games and then running the ball sparingly in a third game, Iroquois running back Zach Poulson returned to full duty Friday in the Braves' 24-13 victory over Youngsville. Poulson, who had been sidelined with a cracked rib, rushed 28 times for 137 yards and three short touchdowns. Poulson was the Distirct 10 rushing leader through two weeks after opening the season with back-to-back 200-yard games.

-- Iroquois still is in the D-10 Class A playoff race after moving to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in Region 2 play. The Braves are in fourth place behind Saegertown, Mercyhurst Prep and Cambridge Springs. Iroquois has lost to Saegertown and Mercyhurst in region play.

-- Sophomore quarterback Alex Tombaugh made the most of his first start at quarterback for Iroquois. He completed 6-of-8 passes for 104 yards.

-- The Saegertown-Linesville game was everything people thought it would be. Both teams have been impressive all season in Class A, as the Panthers entered the game at 6-0 and the Lions entered at 5-1. Saegertown was the clear favorite but for more than three quarters Linesville took it to the Panthers.

Led by quarterback Trevor Litwiler's 206 passing yards and 126 rushing yards, the Lions took a 35-21 lead in the fourth quarter. Then the Panthers scored 21 unanswered points, including an overtime touchdown to claim a 41-35 victory.

Keenan Ellison continued to be a star for Saegertown. He caught two passes in the game and scored on both -- from 50 yards and 45 yards. He also had a 23-yard TD run and added a key interception in overtime.

-- Joe Hewel helped get Seneca back on winning track by rushing for 172 yards and two TDs and passing for 82 yards and a TD in a 33-21 victory over Harbor Creek.

-- Slippery Rock beat Meadville 24-14 Friday in a non-region game, but the Bulldogs still are in position to win Region 5. Meadville (5-2, 2-0) will host Grove City (5-2, 2-0) next Friday with a chance to clinch at least a tie for the region title.

-- Jared Lane turned in an outstanding performance in Fairview's 42-13 victory over Maplewood. Lane, a tailback, carried 28 times for 192 yards and TD runs of 37, 10 and 9 yards. He is part of the Tigers' one-two rushing punch with Peter Jackson. Jackson was limited to 31 yards on 14 carries Friday.

-- Union City's Dominic Crocker had one of the season's best defensive efforts Friday, intercepting four passes and recovering a fumble in a 39-6 victory over Harborcreek Youth Services.

-- Girard's Kyle Marzalen had just one carry Friday night, but he made the most of it. He broke a 92-yard touchdown run.

McDowell press box renamed for former teacher

The late Larry Moore, who taught English at McDowell High School for three decades, was celebrated during halftime of Friday’s football game between the Trojans and Gateway.

The press box at Gus Anderson Field, which Moore supervised throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, was renamed in his honor. Times-News contributing writer Chuck Pora, who led the campaign for the name change, presented a commemorative plaque to members of the Moore family.

The plaque, featuring a photo of Moore, was hung inside the press box after the ceremony. It read:

“Larry W. Moore oversaw operations of this press box during McDowell football games for nearly 20 years during the 1980s and 90s. Through his warm and friendly hospitality, Larry was a true ambassador for the Trojans. “Brother” Moore, as he was fondly called, was an extremely popular English teacher and advisor for the school newspaper and yearbook at McDowell for nearly 30 years. Larry, who died in 2007, will long be remembered for his dedication, glowing personality and lasting contributions to McDowell, as well as Trojans football through his services to this press box.”

Moore died April 30, 2007, at age 60.

Unknown District 10 tennis champs know PIAA foes

District 10 won’t determine its Class AAA and Class AA girls singles champions until Monday. But at least they already know their opponents for the first round of the PIAA tennis tournament.

The D-10 AAA champ will draw District 6 representative Kirsten Messner, an Altoona senior, at the Hershey Racquet Club on Oct. 31. State College’s Corinne Jones beat Messner 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 in the district final last weekend, but Jones withdrew from states in order to concentrate on a USTA tournament held at the same time.

The D-10 AA titlist will open against the second seed from District 7. That player is Vincentian Academy junior Elise Held, who lost to California, Pa., freshman Sarah Shashura 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 in the WPIAL final Sept. 26.

Monday’s championship matches will start at 3:30 p.m. at the Pennbriar Athletic Club.

Take a look at Gateway star's greatest hits

The Gateway football team, with its No. 1 state ranking and four Division I recruits, visits McDowell on Friday.

The top recruit on the team -- and possibly the premier recruit in Pennsylvania -- is 6-foot 1-inch, 220-pound linebacker Dorian Bell. Bell, who has committed to Ohio State, is a big-play running back, but he has gained the most attention for his relentless pass rush and mind-blowing hits on defense.

Check out some of Bell's highlights.

Lakers tame Tigers en route to District 10 tournament

Unless the weather dictates otherwise, the Mercyhurst Prep girls tennis team will get plenty of court time the remainder of this week.

The Lakers (10-0) clinched a share of the Region 2 title with a 5-0 victory over rival Fairview on Wednesday. It was the second of five straight days that Mercyhurst is scheduled to trade volleys.

Mercyhurst beat McDowell on Tuesday. The Lakers take on Central Tech today at 4 p.m. at Frontier Park, then travel to McMurray on Friday for a non-region matchup against Peters Township.

Those are preludes to Saturday's District 10 singles tennis tournament at the Pennbriar Athletic Club. Highlighted by senior Rebecca Haener, Mercyhurst is the favorite to produce the Class AA champion.

The tournament will start at 9 a.m. and run through the semifinals. The AA and Class AAA championship matches will take place Monday at 3:30 p.m.

Zimmer goal gives Prep win over McDowell

Cathedral Prep senior Andrew Zimmer scored the lone goal in the Ramblers’ 1-0 victory over McDowell on Tuesday at Gus Anderson Field. Zimmer, in his first extensive action as a midfielder, beat Trojans’ goalkeeper Chris Fanzini on a low shot from right side of the box 2 minutes, 7 seconds into the second half.

Prep goalie Mitchell Mack made the goal hold up for his second shutout against McDowell this season. The Ramblers improved to 10-3-1 overall and took the lead in Region 4 at 8-0-1.

McDowell (10-3-1, 7-1-1) saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end.
